I Cannot Find What I Did Wrong

There is no mistake and that is the problem.

You have been through it. Thoroughly, several times, in the way somebody goes through a thing when they genuinely want to find something. The watering, the position, the soil, the timing, the pot, the temperature in that room.

And every line of enquiry comes back clean.

And instead of that being a relief, which is what it ought to be, it has been getting worse. Because a clean result does not close the file. It just means the mistake has not been found yet, and so you go round again.

You are not required to find an error, and the absence of a mistake has never once meant somebody had not looked hard enough.

Now, let me put the real question, and I think you will recognize it once it is asked.

What would finding it have given you?

Because there is an answer and it is not really about learning for next time. If it had been about that, one honest inconclusive review would have been enough and you would have moved on.

What finding it would have given you is a world in which that outcome had a cause you controlled.

And a world like that is frightening in one way, because it means you did it, and enormously comforting in another, because it means the next one is up to you.

The alternative, the one you have actually been handed, is a world in which you did everything right and it went anyway. And that is a much harder room to stand in.

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations

There is a moment at the end of Job where God finally answers, and the answer is famously not an answer.

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? (Job 38:2 to 4, King James Version)

Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth.

Now, Job has spent a great many chapters asking for a reason. He has been specific and persistent and he has had every right to ask.

And God arrives, and does not give him one. Not a partial one. Not a simplified one for a creature who could not take the full version. He asks Job about the sea and the stars and the wild goats for four chapters and never once explains anything.

You are looking at a passage where the reason is withheld by somebody who plainly had it, and an explanation has never once been the thing God was obliged to hand over. Job 38:4 answers a demand for reasons with a question about foundations, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land on a woman going round a file for the ninth time.

And here is the strange thing about it, and it is the reason the book works.

Job is satisfied. Not because he understood. He says afterward that he spoke of things he did not know, and he stops. The thing that settled him was not information.

You are able to be settled without being informed, and an answer has never once been the only thing that ends a search. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles somebody without explaining anything to them, and the written word gives four chapters of questions and no reason anywhere in them.

And notice what those chapters actually do. They put a person in a world that is much larger than their own case, run by somebody who is competent and not accountable to them.

That is not a rebuke. It is a change of room.

You are standing in something considerably larger than your own investigation, and a person's file has never once been the size of the world it sits in. The Spirit of God is the one who moves somebody out of their own courtroom and into open country, and the word does it with wild goats and rain and the springs of the sea.

The file cannot close itself

Let me be practical about the mechanism, because this will keep running unless something interrupts it.

An investigation that has no conclusion built into it cannot end on its own.

Yours has a specific structure. It looks for an error. If it finds one, it ends. If it does not find one, it does not conclude that there was none, it concludes that the search was incomplete.

So the two outcomes are: found, or keep looking. There is no third door and you have been walking that corridor for weeks.

You are inside a structure with no exit built into it, and a search that treats every clean result as incomplete has never once been able to finish. The Holy Spirit is the one who can end what cannot end itself, and Job 38 closes a man's questioning without answering a single one of his questions.

And here is what the going round has been doing to you, which is worse than the original loss.

Every pass makes the possibility of an unfound error more solid, because the searching itself implies there is something to find. Nobody searches a room nine times for something that is not in it.

So the ninth search is evidence, to you, that there is something there, and the evidence was manufactured entirely by the searching.

You are producing the evidence by looking for it, and a repeated search has never once been proof that a thing was in the room. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a person the shape of their own machinery, and the written word ends a long enquiry from outside it rather than from within.

Close the file out loud

So here is the assignment, and it is a closing rather than an answer.

Close the file out loud by saying that there was no mistake, and then stop.

Say it plainly. There was no mistake. I did not do anything wrong.

You are able to state a finding out loud, and a conclusion said in your own voice has never once been less real than one somebody else delivered. Job 38 ends a man's enquiry without giving him the reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one at that table while a woman closes something.

Now, the objection is coming and I will answer it before it arrives.

The objection is that nobody could know that. That there might have been something. That saying there was no mistake is a claim nobody is entitled to make.

But look at the alternative claim, which you have been making for weeks without noticing. You have been asserting that there was one, on no evidence, and searching accordingly. That is the claim that has been running, and it is the one with nothing behind it.

You are choosing between two claims rather than between a claim and neutrality, and the assumption that there was an error has never once been the safer of the two. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person put down an assumption they never examined, and the word answers a demand for reasons by widening the room instead.

And then stop. That is the second half. When it comes back tonight, and it will, do not reopen it. Notice it, and do not take it up, and let it go by unworked.
