I Want To Plant More On Top

The packet is still in your hand.

You went out to look at the bed, the way you have every morning for two weeks, and there is nothing there, and on the way back through you picked the packet up off the bench without really deciding to.

And now you are standing there holding it, and the thought has arrived fully formed: I could just put a few more in.

Over the top. In the same soil. It would take two minutes and nobody would know and it would double the chances.

Let me say the obvious thing first, and then the real thing.

The obvious thing is that it does not work. You know it does not work. Sowing a second lot into soil that already has seed in it crowds what is down there, disturbs the surface, and gives you two sets of timings tangled in one patch so you can never tell what is happening. The advice against it is not obscure.

And you know all of that, which is why you have been standing there for a minute and a half instead of doing it.

You are able to leave the first lot alone, and a second handful has never once been able to secure certainty for anybody.

So here is the real thing, and it is the only part worth our time.

That handful is not agriculture. It is insurance. You are not trying to grow more, you are trying to feel less exposed, and there is a difference between those two and the difference is the whole article.

In quietness and in confidence

There is a line in Isaiah spoken to people who were arranging a backup plan, and it is remarkably direct about what the backup was actually for.

For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not. (Isaiah 30:15, King James Version)

In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.

Now, the situation behind that verse is worth knowing. Israel was in danger and was busy organizing help from Egypt. Horses, chariots, a second arrangement in case the first one did not hold.

And God does not argue about the horses. He goes underneath them, to what the horses were for.

You are being addressed underneath the thing you are considering rather than about it, and God has never once needed to argue about a handful of seed to reach a man. Isaiah 30:15 goes past the chariots to the fear that ordered them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reaches a man where his hand actually is.

And look at what strength is located in.

Quietness and confidence. Which is to say, in not doing the extra thing. The strength was in the absence of the second arrangement, not in its quality.

That is an uncomfortable place to be told your strength is, because it feels like being told to do nothing while something is at stake.

You are being pointed at a strength that lives in the not doing, and a second arrangement has never once been the thing that was holding anybody up. The Holy Spirit is the one who supplies what a backup was reaching for, and the written word puts the strength squarely in the quietness rather than in the preparation.

And then the last three words of the verse, which are the saddest in Isaiah. And ye would not.

No thunder. No punishment described. Just a note that it was offered and declined, and the sentence stops there.

You are being offered the same thing they were offered, and an offer like that has never once been withdrawn because a man stood in a yard thinking about it. The word records the refusal without any anger attached to it, and the Spirit of God is the one still holding the offer out while a man decides what to do with a packet.

What the second handful is actually for

Let me be exact about the mechanism, because it is worth seeing clearly.

If you put a second lot in, one of two things happens.

Something comes up, and you will never know which sowing it came from, and so the experience will teach you nothing and will not settle anything. You will be exactly as uncertain next time.

Or nothing comes up, and you will have doubled the evidence against yourself, and instead of one lot that did not work you will have two, and the arithmetic will feel much worse than it did.

You are considering a move that cannot improve your position in either direction, and insurance has never once paid out on a thing like this. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man the shape of an action before he takes it, and Isaiah 30:15 puts the strength in the quietness precisely because the extra arrangement is not carrying anything.

And there is a third outcome that is the real cost.

The bed stops being a place where something is quietly happening and becomes a place where you are managing risk. That changes what it is to walk out there in the morning. It is no longer a man going to look at his garden. It is a man checking on a position.

You are able to keep that bed as a place you simply go and look at, and ground has never once had to become something a man supervises. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a thing restful that could easily become work, and the written word offers returning and rest before it offers anything else.

Put the packet back

So here is the assignment, and it is the smallest one on this whole site.

Put the packet back in the drawer and shut the drawer.

That is all. Not throw it away. Not give it to somebody. Put it back where it lives and close the drawer on it.

You are able to end this by putting one thing back where it came from, and two seconds of ordinary tidying has never once been too little to be an actual decision. Isaiah 30:15 puts the strength in quietness, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing there while a man closes a drawer.

Why the drawer specifically, and why shut it.

Because the packet on the bench is an open question. Every time you pass it, the question gets asked again, and you have to decline again, and declining ten times a day is exhausting in a way that declining once is not.

In the drawer with the drawer shut, it is not asking. The matter is settled by furniture rather than by willpower, which is a much more reliable arrangement.

You are settling a thing with a drawer rather than with resolve, and a decision that does not depend on a man's willpower has never once been a lesser decision. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a small practical act, and the word puts the whole strength in the quietness, which is what a shut drawer produces.
